Silver Stone Cushion Bush (Calocephalus brownii 'Silver Stone')

Silver Stone Cushion Bush is a fast way to add clean, modern silver texture to containers and sunny beds. Its wiry, sculptural branching creates a tight, rounded mound that makes nearby greens and bright blooms look sharper. The foliage stays the star, giving you season-long contrast without needing a flower show to carry it. Use it when you want a polished, drought-tolerant accent that looks intentional from day one.

Distinctive Features

This tender subshrub forms a compact, cushion-like mound of silvery, felted stems and fine branchlets that read as soft and coral-like at the same time. Flowers are small and usually insignificant, so the plant is grown primarily for its silver structure and texture. In full sun and well-drained soil, it holds a dense, rounded shape that works as a living sculpture in mixed plantings. It is especially useful for adding contrast and a clean, architectural note to warm-season designs.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best density and color in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, especially sandy or gritty mixes, and avoid heavy, wet ground.
  • Water: Low to moderate moisture, water to establish, then let soil dry slightly between waterings.
  • USDA Zones: 10 to 11 as a perennial, typically grown as an annual elsewhere.
  • Mature Size: About 8 to 12 inches tall and about 12 inches wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a container or small bed where the silver mound can anchor the entire color palette.
  • Mixed Containers: Pair with flowering annuals and grasses to add contrast and a crisp, modern texture note.
  • Edging and Accents: Dot along sunny borders to create repeating silver punctuation that ties plantings together.
  • Rock Gardens: Plant in sunny, well-drained pockets where the compact habit stays tidy.
  • Hot, Dry Spots: Use in beds that bake, where tougher foliage accents are needed to hold through summer.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Avoid soggy soil, and water deeply only when the soil has partially dried.
  • Pruning: Trim lightly to maintain a tight mound and remove any loose or damaged stems.
  • Drainage: Prioritize fast drainage in beds and containers to reduce stress and decline.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in containers, since overly rich feeding can reduce the clean, compact look.
  • Cold Protection: Protect from frost, and overwinter in a bright, frost-free spot if you want to keep it long-term.

Why Choose Silver Stone Cushion Bush?

  • High-Impact Silver: Silvery branching delivers instant contrast that sharpens the whole planting.
  • Compact Shape: Forms a neat, rounded mound that stays polished in tight spaces.
  • Heat Tolerance: Handles hot summer conditions well when drainage is good.
  • Drought Tolerance: Performs reliably with less water once established.
  • Design Versatility: Works as an accent, edging, or container anchor in modern and classic palettes.

If you want a silver foliage accent that reads clean and architectural, Silver Stone Cushion Bush is an easy fit. Give it sun, sharp drainage, and modest water, and it will hold a tidy, sculptural mound through the season. It looks especially strong repeated across containers or used as a silver thread in a border. The result is a more finished, intentional look with minimal effort.

Clear and powerful analysis.
Format: Paperback
The three books in Bowlby's trilogy on Attachment, Separation and Loss need to be read a whole. Using the studies and case histories of children being separated from their mothers and important others, in a wide range of circumstances from separations of only a few minutes, through separations of several weeks on up to prolonged and permanent separation due to divorce and death, Bowlby outlines a new way of understanding neurosis, psychosis and optimal, healthy functioning. Using the lens of a Darwinian analysis, and the case histories written up by psychoanalysts spanning decades, he compares and contrasts his new theory with that of previous psychological thought, especially the psychoanalytic tradition. I found his analysis penetrating and illuminating. It sets the stage and formulates the hypotheses for further research. Much of that research has now taken place and has borne out Bowlby's theories. Not all of it, of course. Because Bowlby's attachment theory became and continues to be such a foundational analysis for so much that has followed in its wake, from evolutionary psychology to child development to psychotherapy, it is a must read for anyone interested in these and related fields.

A briliant book
Format: Paperback
This book is very neat in its specifics about the effects of absence when a mother is not in a child's life and the roles and effects of mother figures as well. Myself dealing with abandonment issues from my mom and my mother figure in my life, this book really assists in identifying the issues caused from the absent parent. Though the book doesn't offer any real advice as to deal with these problems that arise, it identify's the issues and allows you to further your research in progression. The writing style used can get rather complex though, be prepared for that. I agree with everything provided in this book and recommend it to anyone who's interested in either the psychological effects of absence of a parent, or seek to identify it themselves.

Bowlby Books
Format: Paperback
As an MFT graduate student, first hand accounts are important. For the price, add depth to your research writing as the theory intended. Bowlby makes separation axiety, child anger and anger clear. This is a good read even for those who are not in a clinical field. Worth a lot more too me than I paid.

Another piece to the triology offered by Bowlby
Format: Paperback
As with Bowlbys' other works, this classic furthers the hypothesis of negative emotional influence on the continued development of humans as we integrate with our social environments. I liked it...in fact, liked all of Bowlbys' writings.
